National Senior Independence Month: Helping Older Adults Stay Self-Sufficient in Our Communities

February is National Senior Independence Month, a time to examine the challenges presented when aging in place, support initiatives that promote senior independence, and advocate for communities and resources that help foster an independent and fulfilling lifestyle for older adults.

At Christian Health, we offer a variety of independent-living options for older adults in several communities on our campuses in Wyckoff and Wayne, New Jersey. These welcoming and secure communities are designed with the unique needs of older adults in mind and offer accessible accommodations, versatile social activities, and supportive, convenient services to encourage independence.

The Vista

The newest addition to our campus, The Vista is a premier continuing care retirement community with a focus on inspired living. The Vista promotes independence by providing residents with luxury amenities, a robust calendar of activities, and access to our continuum of life-care services, such as assisted living and skilled nursing, provided conveniently on the same campus.

Adults age 62 and older enjoy The Vista’s beautiful apartment homes with a variety of floor plans and vast amenities, including upscale on-site dining, a state-of-the-art performing arts center, a swimming pool and fitness center, a spa and salon services, a library, an art studio, paved walking trails and gardens with views of the mountains, a lobby with concierge desk, 24-hour security, an underground parking garage, on-site guest accommodations, and an extensive variety of planned social events, educational programs, and cultural activities.

A great of perk of Vista living is the ease of having all major living expenses included in one flat rate and the comfort of knowing your future is planned for should you need health care down the line. Living at The Vista is similar to an all-inclusive resort, as meals, admission to events, housing maintenance and repairs, housekeeping tasks, security, and even some utilities are included.

Evergreen Court

Designed to offer supportive independent living for adults 62 and older, Evergreen Court is a homey, close-knit community that fosters both privacy and security. The community has a strong focus on independence with the added benefit of camaraderie and socializing with other residents.

Each of the community’s 40 apartment homes features a living room, a galley kitchen, a bedroom with a closet, a full bathroom with safety railings, cable television access, and private telephone hook-up. Evergreen Court offers both low-income and market-rate options.

Evergreen Court includes many shared spaces for socializing, activities, and entertainment, including a communal dining room, cozy sitting rooms, a charming porch and patio area, a library, an activities room, community gardens, and laundry facilities. Many personal services are available for residents’ convenience, including delivered meals, housekeeping, personal maintenance, 24-hour private-duty nursing, and internet connection.

Hillcrest

The Christian Health community of Hillcrest is a unique blend of independent apartment homes, assisted living services, and social activities for older adults, known fittingly as “independent-plus living.” The charming community perfectly blends self-sufficiency with socialization and companionship, perfect for the older adult who still desires privacy but is also looking for friends and security.

Each resident enjoys a private studio with the benefit of shared, restaurant-style dining, planned group activities, and the presence of 24-hour staff. Residents can personalize their homes with their own furnishings and enjoy supportive features such as an emergency call system in each bedroom and bathroom, fire safety features, housekeeping and linen service, general maintenance, regular safety checks, and snow removal.

At Hillcrest three healthy, delicious meals are served each day in a social setting where residents enjoy the company of friends. Snacks are also available throughout the day. A resident activities committee plans a fun-filled calendar of events, which includes bingo games, movie nights, and a monthly birthday celebration for all residents.

Hillcrest offers a variety of on-site amenities and services for its happy inhabitants, including an on-site laundry room, a library, a beauty parlor, church services, group transportation services, a community lounge, laundry facilities, physical therapy, nutritional counseling, and adult day-care programs.

Siena Village of Wayne

Siena Village of Wayne is a vibrant independent-living community designed to meet the needs of active adults 62 and older by offering low-income, moderate-income, and market-rate apartments in an attractive, secure, and social environment. The conveniently located community is in close proximity to banks, churches, grocery stores, a post office, restaurants, the Wayne Library, and town tennis courts.

Activities and programs are designed to appeal to a broad range of interests, experiences, and backgrounds. Residents enjoy a robust calendar of events, from cookouts and concerts to book clubs and Bible studies. Amenities at Siena Village of Wayne include 24-hour security; assigned, off-street parking; a beauty salon and barber shop; bocce court; a community room with billiard table, TV, game tables, and dance floor; complimentary transportation to shopping centers; a fitness room with exercise equipment; landscaped grounds and snow removal; a laundry room; and a library.

Summer Hill of Wayne

Summer Hill of Wayne offers residents independent living in a serene, natural setting with access to a variety of amenities. This community is designed to meet the needs of active adults 55 and older and offers affordable private residences in an attractive and secure environment.

Summer Hill provides convenient amenities to residents to foster a comfortable lifestyle and encourage socialization and a sense of community. Available services and community perks include an on-site beauty salon, a café, off-street parking, transportation to shopping centers, a community room and robust calendar of events and activities, laundry facilities, landscaped grounds and snow removal, a library, and some included utilities, such as gas, heat, and hot water.
