Hillcrest – Independent-Plus Living in Bergen County

Hillcrest – Independent-Plus Living in Bergen County

The Christian Health community of Hillcrest is a unique blend of independent apartment homes, assisted living services, and social activities for older adults, known fittingly as “independent-plus living.” The charming community perfectly blends self-sufficiency with socialization and companionship, perfect for the older adult who still desires privacy but is also looking for friends to dine and chat with as well as someone to check on them.

Hillcrest consists of 31 apartment homes, each with a private bathroom that is handicap accessible. The community provides housekeeping and maintenance services, making it ideal for older adults looking for a little extra help. A community kitchen and dining area allow residents to cook for themselves if they like or join their fellow residents for a meal prepared by Vinny, Hillcrest’s on-site chef. Vinny and staff cook three delicious and nutritious meals for residents each day, and the refrigerator is stocked with ice cream, soda, yogurt, and other goodies at all times. Dry snacks and cereals are available, as well.

Hillcrest also offers a variety of on-site amenities and services for its happy inhabitants, including on-site laundry room, a library, a beauty parlor, physical therapy services, church services, group transportation services, and a community lounge that can be reserved for private get-togethers with family. The community boasts a fun-filled calendar of events, which includes bingo games, movie nights, social tea times, and trips out into the community.

While there are no nurses on-site at Hillcrest, a 24-hour staff is available in case of emergency or to lend a hand to any resident who may need some extra assistance. Residents can request room service if they are not feeling up to joining everyone in the dining room, and they are provided pendants to wear so that they can easily call for help if they fall or need help. “They always have someone to check on them,” said Mary Mariconda, Director of Hillcrest. “It’s a good set-up.”

If Hillcrest residents are looking for a little fresh air, there are plenty of outdoor areas to get some sun. The community features several shared decks and patios for residents to lounge and chat and balconies that look out over breathtaking views of the Ramapo Mountains. Community garden planters that residents can help tend and care for are filled with beautiful flowers, veggies, and herbs. One particular resident makes good use of the tomato plant in the authentic Italian dishes he whips up in the shared kitchen – everything from homemade pizza to broccoli rabe.
