When George Sembos was admitted to a Bolger Short-Term Rehab following a severe bout of COVID-19, he and his family hoped he would be able to soon return to the active lifestyle he had previously enjoyed.
George had been hospitalized with COVID-19 for two weeks and was experiencing reduced strength and mobility after his discharge.
“He needed rehab be able to walk again,” said his daughter Sofia Sembos. “He and my mom live independently, and before he got sick, he was very active. He loves to garden.”
Sofia is a retired elder care and mental health attorney, so her professional understanding of long-term care ensured she knew what kind of support her father needed. “Christian Health was really a step above,” she said.
Impressed with the care her father received at rehab, Sofia emphasized how the team’s attentive approach to rehabilitation made all the difference in his progress. Unlike their previous experiences with rehab centers, she found that the team at Bolger actively supported and motivated him. “Here, I felt like the focus was really getting him better,” she said. “He was always encouraged to move around. At some places, they don't even want you to get up.”
Sofia also appreciated the welcoming and friendly attitude everyone showed her and her family during her father’s stay. They were encouraged to visit and share meals in a private dining space and felt empowered to support George’s recovery alongside the rehab team. “They were so happy when we came,” she said. “Everybody was very receptive to us. We were welcome to get him up, move him, eat with him, and encourage him to walk or get in the wheelchair. Nobody curtailed our efforts.”
Sofia appreciated the effective communication and helpfulness of the team at Bolger. “Everybody was so accommodating,” she said. “Whenever we had a question, if someone didn't know the answer, they found somebody who did.”
One particularly memorable example of the rehab team going the extra mile came when George celebrated his birthday at the rehab center. “They were so happy,” said Sofia. “We brought a cake, and the staff came and sang happy birthday to him.”
Even the smallest details didn’t go unnoticed. George, who relies on a cane, was always reassured that it was in his vicinity if he ever needed it. “He likes his cane nearby because he feels vulnerable without it,” said Sofia. “The staff made sure it was always on the edge of his nightstand or near his bed where he could access it. They respected the fact that he was independent and always encouraged him to move.”
Now 95, George has gotten back to his love of gardening and is feeling more like himself every day. “They really did everything to make sure he got home quickly and help him get well,” said Sofia.
