Dario and Gloria Gomez Call Longview Home

Dario and Gloria Gomez Call Longview Home

Dario and Gloria Gomez moved to Longview Assisted Living in October 2021, after living in Florida for 20-plus years since their retirement.

During the pandemic, Dario began to have some health issues and Gloria’s developing dementia worsened. Because they were down in Florida, it was a struggle for their daughter, also named Gloria, to help care for them. That’s why they made the decision to move back to New Jersey and into Longview, where she’d be close enough to visit regularly and they’d have the 24-hour support they needed.

“Everything from start to finish was incredible,” said Gloria of Longview. “If my parents were home with me, they’d be less independent. It’s never stressful because I know they’re taken care of. They are always treated like people – they have a voice.”

“It’s a beautiful community,” said Dario. “It’s like we’re on a permanent vacation.”

Gloria cites the constant social interaction and face-to-face contact – things her parents didn’t get down in Florida – as a significant factor in their continued health and vitality. “They are being socially stimulated in all different ways, like my mom with her Alzheimer’s,” she said. “She does bingo and exercise class every day – she paints and does crafts. In the summers they have concerts, and they dance.” Dario, who always loved exercise and lifting weights, also keeps active by walking a mile a day to run errands.

The helpful Longview team are also major factors in the couple’s positive experience with the community. “The staff is always smiling,” said Gloria. “They’re so cheerful. The kindness I’ve felt from everyone is incredible. The residents are always so happy, too.”

“My parents are some of the younger people here,” she continued. “At first my dad was a little taken aback, but within a couple months of meeting everyone, he would say, ‘I met this person who is going to be 100 and another who is going to be 104.’ But he doesn’t think of it as a sad thing. He said, ‘They lived a beautiful life and here we are together – it’s like you walk around here and you’re already in heaven.’”
