Southgate Special Care: Compassionate Behavior Management
Southgate Special Care is a healing, therapeutic community that provides compassionate care for adults with special care needs caused by behavioral disturbances associated with dementia, schizophrenia, or other mood disorders – one of a select group of communities in New Jersey licensed to provide this specialized care and the only one in Bergen County.
Many people who come to Southgate have received care in other communities but still need additional support to manage their symptoms and daily functioning. After arriving at Southgate, these residents often benefit because of our exceptional team's acute understanding of their needs. Southgate provides a structured, healing environment where residents can build and strengthen their skills so that they may transition to a setting with fewer supports
The Southgate Approach
Our skilled multidisciplinary team provides individualized, person- and family-centered, compassionate treatment that helps alleviate symptoms and improve quality of life. All team members receive specialized training in providing considerate, gentle care to all residents and are certified in de-escalation techniques to resolve conflict and promote calmness.
Southgate’s treatment approach includes:
- 24-hour nursing care
- An on-site psychiatrist to support behavioral health
- Therapeutic activities to soothe and engage residents
- Life skills education, including meal planning and problem solving
- Physical, occupational, and speech therapy, if needed
- Specialized cardiac oversight and care services
- Family support with follow-uptraining, discharge planning, and caregiver education
- Pastoral care services, if desired
Southgate is an approved Medicaid community.
Therapeutic Activities
Southgate’s personalized therapeutic activities are thoughtfully designed to help residents stay socialized, stimulate memory, and enhance calm.
Activities include:
- Music & Memory® program
- Gentle fitness activities
- Arts and crafts and journaling
- Live entertainment and dance
- Stimulating games
- Outdoor social events

The healing community’s peaceful environment helps ease resident stress, alleviate symptoms, and promote relaxation. Some of Southgate’s soothing features include:
- A tranquil Circadian-rhythm lighting system
- A multisensory Snoezelen lounge with therapeutic lighting, aromatherapy, and sound
- A cozy, homelike dining room
- An enclosed patio to enjoy the soothing sights of nature
- A comforting pet therapy area
