Southgate Special Care

At Christian Health, we believe in the value of every individual, and our community was born of a desire to improve the quality of care for people who faced cognitive challenges. Through Southgate, a special-care skilled nursing center located on our campus in Bergen County, NJ, we have expanded upon that desire, offering behavior management care for adults who have behavioral disturbances associated with dementia and other illness.

About Behavior Management

Behavior management modifies the severe behavioral disturbances of some forms of dementia and cognitive disorders, such as combative, disruptive, and disturbing conduct. Common behavioral disturbances associated with dementia and similar conditions include:

  • Unmanageable episodes of agitation
  • History of abusive behavior
  • Resisting care
  • Screaming and hostility
  • Verbal disruption
  • Self-harm from elopement (running away), falls, and unsafe movement
  • Inappropriate sexual behavior
  • Pacing
  • Destructive behavior

Designed to provide residents with the most clinically effective treatment in the least restrictive manner, Southgate can accommodate 44 patients in long-term care. The highly qualified, caring staff of professionals offers expertise in behavior management; psychiatry; psychology; nursing; activity therapy; physical, occupational, and speech therapy; and social services.

Southgate is licensed by the State of New Jersey and is an approved Medicaid facility.

Therapeutic Activity Programs

Southgate’s therapeutic-activity programs meet the needs of residents in an environment that is stimulating and social, as well as helpful in decreasing socially inappropriate behavior. Among the programs is Snoezelen therapy, which relaxes, calms, and provides a soothing, tranquil environment. It increases a person’s awareness of self, others, and the environment through light, sound, and aromatherapy.
