A Century of Faith, Family, and Service: Siena Village of Wayne Celebrates Dorothy Walter’s 100th Birthday

At Siena Village of Wayne, Dorothy Walter is known not just by name, but by the heart she has shared with so many people.

For more than 30 years, Walter has been part of the fabric of the community. As one of Siena Village’s original residents, she became a familiar face in the halls, a neighbor who was always ready to help, and a friend whose warmth made others feel seen. On May 13, 2026, family, friends, staff, and local leaders gathered to celebrate a milestone few people reach: her 100th birthday.

Born in Philadelphia on May 11, 1926, Walter has lived through a century of change, challenge, and history. During World War II, she worked at the Navy Yard, where she met President Franklin D. Roosevelt during his 1944 visit. It was also where she first crossed paths with the sailor who would become her husband after returning from the Pacific. The two built a life together in New Jersey and raised 10 children (seven boys and three girls), creating a family that now continues through generations of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

But the people who gathered to honor Walter were not there simply to mark 100 years. They were there to celebrate what she did with those years.

Walter has long been remembered at Siena Village for assisting others, making friends easily, and being known by nearly everyone in the building. Family members said she was very independent and active in the community she calls “home.” Even as health challenges arose in recent years, the relationships she built remained a reflection of the woman she has always been: faithful, generous, and devoted to the people around her.

“Dorothy Walter’s 100th birthday is a truly momentous occasion, and we are honored to celebrate this milestone with her family, friends, and the Siena Village community,” said Christian Health President and CEO Steve Dumke, LNHA, FACHE, at the birthday event. “Dorothy’s life has been defined by faith, service, and care for others. During her 30 years as a resident at Siena Village, she has been an integral part of this community, always focused on helping those around her. Her legacy is one of generosity, strength, and love, and we are grateful to recognize and celebrate her today.”

To her children, Walter’s legacy begins at home. Her daughter Dorothy Mucci said the celebration was a meaningful tribute to a woman who has given so much of herself.

“I’m very honored they did this for my mother,” Mucci said. “She’s a great lady and a great mother to all of us crazy kids.”

Family members describe Walter as a woman of deep faith and steady devotion, who loved God and her family and found happiness in life’s simple routines. She enjoys reading, crafts, family gatherings, word searches, watching “Wheel of Fortune” and “Jeopardy.”

Her son, the Rev. Andrew Walter, said reaching 100 reflects his mother’s spirit, resilience, and lifelong care for others.

“Celebrating my mother’s 100th birthday is a blessing that speaks to her faith, her strength, and the love that has surrounded her throughout her life,” he said. “We are deeply grateful for the caring and dedicated staff at Siena Village, who have supported her with compassion and respect for so many years. Their care has helped make this community a place where she has been able to live with dignity, connection, and joy.”

Wayne Mayor Christopher Vergano attended the celebration and presented Walter with a township proclamation, recognizing not only the rarity of her 100th birthday but also the example behind it.

“Dorothy Walter’s 100th birthday is a remarkable milestone and a true cause for celebration,” Vergano said. “Dorothy is an inspiration to all of us, not only for reaching this incredible occasion, but for the life she has lived, the family she has built, and the example she continues to set.”

Her daughter, Mary Walter, captured her mother’s spirit in a few words: strength, courage, class, glamour, God, and family. She said her mother “loved everyone” and was the glue that held the family together.

As guests gathered around Walter at Siena Village, the celebration became more than a birthday party. It became a portrait of a life shaped by faith, motherhood, friendship, and quiet service.
